[Other] These are the top 73 parks in the United States, ranked based on the quality of their coaster collections, as voted by, well... you! This is as close to objective as a ranking will ever get for this. Don't worry, I have some nerdy data to help explain myself.

This post needs a little clarification. Anyway, many of you are aware of the brilliant Vote Coasters project over at Coaster Bot. If not, take a look: https://coasterbot.com/votecoasters-fullresults2020
2699 enthusiasts from across the wrold people ranked every roller coaster they've ever ridden, at an average of 43 coaster credits per voter (116256 total credits). Many of you personally participated in this survey. Their algorithm is extremely clever (https://coasterbot.com/votecoasters-how) - "The community is only permitted to rank roller coasters they’ve actually ridden. This way each roller coasters position in the final results will be as truthful and accurate as possible. By making it easy for lots of people to contribute their lists, Vote Coasters is able to accumulate a large sample which represents everyone! Once the community has voted, the numbers are crunched. Our method involves directly comparing the rank of two individual roller coasters across all of the submitted lists. As Vote Coasters makes direct comparisons between individual roller coasters, the poll is not a popularity contest. Even obscure roller coasters that few people have had the chance to ride yet can do well!"
I have taken this data and created a point system for coasters that's directly linked to their ranking on Vote Coasters 2020. The #1 ranking, Steel Vengeance, is worth 500 points. [Zadra's second and would be worth 499 points, but it's not in the US] #3, Lightning Rod, gets 498 points. El Toro gets 497 points and so on, all the way down to La Vibora in 499th place, earning only 2 points for its park. Any coaster under the top 500 (such as Corkscrew at Cedar Point) is worth zero points. This weeds out kiddie coasters and terrible coasters from factoring into a park's collection quality. Basically, crappy coasters add zero points to a park's total points, while excellent coasters are worth way more points than mid-tier ones. For coasters with two tracks, such as Gemini or Lightning Racer, I only counted points for the best of the two tracks. My spreadsheet showing the point values for all 256 American coasters in the top 500 is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10aaS1f8CptsXEvUSqE2-VUtal-Od9gim-x8rT7xkT8M/edit?usp=sharing
I have added all of the points for the coasters in all of the 73 American amusement parks that house at least one global top 500 roller coaster. I ranked the earned point totals for all 73 parks. (That's how I got to a "Top 73!") For those like me who care exclusively about coasters and collecting quality credits and nothing else, I think this is an EXCELLENT way to prioritize future amusement park trips based on the quality of each park's overall coaster collection. Without further ado, here's what you want to see:

The Phone Charges - Story #2

Background: I worked over ten years in the hospitality industry. From the information desk in a casino to bellman at tropical island resort to front desk at a manor house hotel in the English countryside are among my experiences.
The Phone Charges – Story #2
So, pull up a chair my young Front Desk Agents, and let ol’ ATM regale you in a story from a long, long time ago, back in ’03. Back then, not everybody had cell phones and cell phone plans were more regional. I was working behind the front desk of a Good Prairie Inn in Duluth. A large hockey tournament was in town, bringing players and parents in from around northern Minnesota.
One morning during these tournaments, a woman was going to be checking out later that morning, but had a question about her bill, more specifically, her phone charges. She was wondering why she was being charged for a phone call being made from her room. Now, as we all know, phone charges from hotels are higher than the home variable interest rates in 2009. I explained that the charge was due to a long distance phone call to a number in Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids is 83 miles and an hour and a half from Duluth, definitely long distance.
She then said that the person who made the phone call was a family member of hers who had checked into the room and then called her on her cell phone. Okay, not a problem, only she says that it shouldn’t be a long distance call.
Why, you ask?
Because her cell plan area includes Duluth. Meaning, she can call a Duluth number with her cell phone from Grand Rapids without being charged long distance.
I try explaining to her that may be the case, but the call originated from her room phone, and that calling the Grand Rapids number was long distance. Needless to say, there was a lot of back and forth and her not understanding the difference between calling a long distance number from a land line and a cell phone calling a land line. Back and forth, back and forth, Karen only got more and more angry and cranked the volume on her shrill voice while riling up her family members that were standing in my lobby.
I finally convinced her that I would not be reversing the phone charges and checked them out while she grumbled away about never staying at the Inn again. Good riddance.
After she and her family walked out, another guest who was sitting in the lobby commented on what an unhappy woman that was and how he would hate to be her husband. He complimented me on how I kept my composure and asked how I was able to keep so cool. My reply to him was that something like that happens about once a month, but when I worked the resorts in Florida, three times a day.

A STADIUM'S WALKABILITY: Using Google Maps, I look at each stadium's walkability and locale

Walkability is something that's important to a stadium. There has to be activity around the stadium for fans to do before and after games. A few stadiums have excellent walkability, while others are terrible. I'll analyze each stadium using Google Maps, as I haven't been to many of these places, and I'd appreciate input from you guys about other things from each stadium that add to the walkability of a stadium.
If anyone has anything to add or correct, please comment. Thank you!

A Live Performance of Every Paramore Song (That They've Played Live)

I decided to make an archive of sorts of my favorite performances of all Paramore's songs that they’ve done live (to my knowledge). Sorry if some are low quality. With some of these songs, low quality video/audio is all there is. Added date and location to each just for some more context. Most of these are the ones I find myself watching most frequently which is why I chose them - not really based on any criteria other than that. Hope I didn’t miss anything :)

How the Ball Pit Episode affected me personally(spoilers)!

So we all know the Ball Pit Episode was where this show really took a dark turn. It was especially jarring because the first part of the episode was pretty innocent and fun. The juxtaposition of darkness and innocence in the ball pit/sky tube setting struck a very specific chord with me and tapped into a very deep place in my memory/nostalgia.
Allow me to explain,

When I was little, ball pits and sky tubes were one of my favorite things ever. When the opportunity to play on them arose, I always took it. However, there was one specific place that'll always hold a spot on my memory.
That place was called "Kids' Quest" and it was attached to the Grand Casino in Hinckley Minnesota. It was a place for kids (as in, usually under 10) to hang while their parents did casino stuff (my folks weren't and aren't serious gamblers, but they went there now and then, mostly to hang with friends and do couples stuff). It had arcade machines, a wooden train table, a big movie room, snacks, and of course a massive sky tube/ball pit set up.

I remember when I was real little (probably about 5 or 6), I wasn't able to make it to the top of the whole set up, but when I was a little older (probably about 7) I was finally able to do so. Being able make it to the top made me feel like I was on top of the world.
If some kind of tragedy or disaster like what on this show happened at that place when I was there as a kid, it would've scarred me for life. Tulip seemed to handle it alright, but she was like 14-15 (or something like that, how old is she? is it ever actually stated?) so she'd be able to handle it better.
By the way, I Googled it, and this place I went to as a kid still exists, but apparently it's called "Kids' Cove" nowadays. Interestingly, I live in the Seattle area nowadays, and over in Bellevue (the rich suburb of this area) there's another place called "Kids' Quest" but its more of a children's museum than an indoor playground area.

Thoughts? I really dug this show, and it made me have a strong emotional feeling when this episode aired because of how it related to a special place in my memory.

I am new investor looking for my first investment property. I found this property in Onamia, MN. It's a 1 bedroom, 1 bath for $39,900 with a square footage of 400 sq ft. This location is right next to Millie Lacs Lake. This is one of the largest lakes in Minnesota. Property comes with an owned permanent slip in the harbor and access to the shower house. It is also 5 mins away from the Grand Casino Mille Lacs.
I feel that location wise this is a pretty good spot for an AirBNB. The range of prices for properties in that area are about $50-150 for single occupancy. I was thinking I can get a couch bed or futon to count that as an extra bed.
There's a $600 HOA for the doc. Taxes are $493. I'm estimating insurance will be around $600 (not completely sure on this). With 20% down and guesstimating probably be about $350 month without including utilities.
A couple of questions that I am unsure about: 1. How to do I estimate utilities on a location that isn't used everyday? 2.What are some things I need to watch out for? 3. How many days do you typically estimate for vacancy when doing an initial evaluation?
If you need further details about the location or property please let me know what you need.

Minnesota LAN (EPIC 1.0)

Hey everyone!
This was posted a while ago but just wanted to pop in another post to advertise Minnesota's second LAN tournament at Mystic Lake Casino April 21st.
The tournament will take place at noon on the 21st and will last until 10pm. We're currently at 4 teams and hoping to reach 8-10, so if you're interested in bringing a team or signing up solo feel free! We're going to add in the solo players to teams that don't have a full roster like we did at GopherCon last fall.
The admission to the event is $20, which will give you access to any and ALL tournaments throughout the event over the weekend. You'll also get a $20 free slot machine card to gamble with if you're interested (so basically the $20 entry fee you can win back if you're lucky). You'll also get discounts for restaurants, gift shops, and hotel with the $20 entry fee so it's a pretty good deal.
As far as the HotS tournament goes, we're going to have a Bo2 group stage from 12:00-3:00, and then begin a Bo3 single elimination tournament from 4:00-10:00. The finals are going to be a Bo5 and will be played on the grand stage. There are $1,000 in prizing for the tournament: 1st place receives $500, 2nd place receives $300, and 3rd place will receive $200.
If you have any questions about the tournament let me know! If you want to sign up, the link is right here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSevxXZRVdN27r3iL5MDOm0marSgyqjKywL3WAns_3xqbgVO8Q/viewform
Thanks all!
edit: the link for the event is right here https://www.shiftupesports.com/epic1
edit2: the tourney is the 21st not the 22nd*
edit3: Have to bring your own equipment. We'll be providing tables, chairs, network switches, ethernet cords, and power outlets

A Week in the Woods

Not quite a week but close enough. Eau Claire, WI is surprisingly depressing. Maybe it was the wrong side of town. 86,000 people live in Eau Claire, which is about half the size of Naperville. That makes Eau Claire the biggest city in Wisconsin for about 150 miles in any direction. There must be a nice part of Eau Claire. Must be. Motel 6 can't pay too much in taxes if they want to sell me a $44 motel room and turn a profit. Eau Claire has sort of an opioid epidemic feel to it. The liquor store that sold me the Fat Tire was a dank little shop run by an old guy who looked like he had a shotgun under the counter. Only one of the two doors was unlocked. I kept an eye on my car out my Motel 6 window until I fell asleep and I got the fuck out of Eau Claire by 7AM Sunday.
Superior, WI and Duluth, MN are sort of shoulder-to-shoulder on the southwest corner of Lake Superior. I'd been through before on my way to the Boundary Waters, and before that on my way to Canada to fish with my dad in the mid-70s. Shipping, mining, lumber centers and the whole fucking area has a tired, rusty, we used to be a real hot place vibe. These must be the people who turned up at the Trump rally. These must be the fucking knuckleheads who think Trump is going to bring back the glory days of shipping, mining, and lumber.
The next stretch of road was half the reason for the trip. Couldn't wait to drive 150 miles up the northern shores of Gitche Gumme. I'm sure it's lovely. When it's not cobalt skies and drizzle. You drive through a tunnel of trees basically and so rather than Lake Superior out the passenger side window you see trees. Some lovely old homes set back in those trees, and I'm sure they have a lovely view out their back windows on Lake Superior. Only when there's a break in the trees do you see the lake and I'll say this much for Lake Superior. It's fucking huge. You can just feel it. At a glance it's no different than Lake Michigan. A water horizon that may as well be the ocean. Maybe it's just because I learned as a young boy just how big Superior is and so I had that in the back of my mind but holy shit. Big. The mist was hanging so low that I could only see a couple of miles out but I knew that I was heading northwest and out the right window was basically a straight line of Superior's full east-west width. That fucking lake goes as far as Illinois and Indiana combined. If I shoved off in a rowboat from here I could paddle 350 fucking miles east. It gets over 1300 feet deep. Never gives up her dead and all that other Lightfoot stuff. There's a reason those homes on Minnesota Rte 61 are built up on bluffs 75 or 100 feet above the water. I can just imagine what that lake looks like when it gets nasty. Those shipping places down in Duluth are right on the water. Cavernous joints the size of jumbo jet hangars. Must be a hell of a place to ride out a bad blow on Lake Superior.
Lutsen, Tofte, Grand Marais are the mapworthy names of the towns along 61 north of Duluth. Holiday gas station mini-marts and Kwik-Trip gas station mini-marts seem to be doing a Macs/Burger King duel in the woods. Nice little towns. Lots of arts & crafts people and laid-back tourism types who sell $9.75 foldable maps to Minnesota's Arrowhead. Laminated in plastic so yeah, sure. Had to buy one. And that $11 pack of Castle Danger Creamy Ale. And some of those naked lady tees. And oh that hat, who would buy that hat?
Had I kept going up 61 for another 40 or so miles I'd have run out of US and A. Instead I turned due north up the Sawbill Trail.
Google Maps & Google Earth were incredibly helpful for the planning of this trip. Never before had I been able to use my satellites to zoom down from space on my actual campsite. (I checked after I got home. The fallen tree that I tight-roped for 15 feet out into the lake so I could cast farther is fucking visible from space.) So as I was driving north up Sawbill Trail I had a fairly good idea of which way the road goes and where I want to turn right onto The Grade, which is the name of the east-west road that snakes all the way around to, eventually, the Canadian border. I was thinking that as I was driving along Sawbill Trail. Google Earth is fucking awesome. Only they didn't say anything about this "pavement ends" sign on this bridge as I cross Temperance River.
Thank God I haven't gotten my January in Colorado tire chain damage repaired yet. You ever drive 55 mph on gravel? Like driving a boat. There's no sure footing. And the road curves around through the forest and shit so you don't want to have to snap a quick turn because that isn't happening. Newton explained it well. Your car wants to maintain going straight ahead and with gravel under your tires that "I'd like to turn now" friction isn't there. So you slow down a little. And listen as the rocks bounce off the undercarriage and the fenders and the paint and I don't give a fuck because tire chain damage is already there!
45 miles of gravel road through the Superior National Forest. Some interesting signage. Logging going on in these here woods since 1838. Older than Chicago? Fuck me. There's possibly a locomotive abandoned in these woods and can I find it? No time to stop and look for a lost locomotive but thanks for the trivia. They laid hundreds of miles of track in these woods back in the 19th century. None of it is visible from Google Earth now. I'll tell you what you do see up in the Arrowhead of Minnesota. Logging trucks. Doubles and even triples. They have signs in the forest telling truckers how many tons they can weigh if they're cab-trailer-trailer-trailer. How in the fuck can somebody drive a triple trailer load of logs through here? Holy shit what a challenge.
Crescent Lake is a fucking gem. I plan on returning often. Annually if I can. I've already tried booking next July 4th week. Can't do it until January.
Tranquil, beautiful, and so fucking quiet at night you cannot believe it. Absolute silence is rare and man is it palpable when you're laying in a tent in the middle of the woods. The lake is like glass but I can still hear the slight sloshing of the water every so often and that's 50 feet from my tent. An owl sounds like an M80. It's just amazing.
And after the 1st night I started to unwind. By day 3 I had my camp set up the way I like. Tarps over everything because rain. With very little warning. So many memories of my BWCA trips and yet I'd forgotten how quickly the weather turns up there. July 5th I slept in a sleeping bag and wore a hoodie. 55-60 degrees tops. 95 down here in Chicago and I'm wearing a hoodie to bed. Yes!
By day 4 I had put Donald Trump out of my mind. Occasionally I would look out over that terrain and that amazing natural beauty and get pissed off. This is the part of my country I love the most and that douchebag is fucking with it. I had sort of an "enjoy it while I still can" feeling and that made me fucking sad. It's amazing how quickly our wilderness areas can be transformed to commercial enterprises. Fuck the eagles and the loons and the silence and here's a Ho Chunk Casino.
I can't recall the last time I went 5 days without talking to someone. Aside from Jack the camp host (who sells wet firewood for $6.50 a bundle) the only other person I talked to all week was the girl at Sawbill who called the ruffed grouse a bastard bird. There's no cell reception in the Superior National Forest so turn the phone off. Useless. If it goes bad on a gravel road out here I could be in for a real adventure. My campsite never felt more like a home. The BWCA trips back in the day was me and 5 friends. 3 canoes. 3 tents. Conversation. Laughter. LSD. Weed. Whiskey. Fart jokes. Lies about conquests among 18 year old idiots. This is all kinds of different. 3 nights alone is the longest I've ever gone. This is twice that. Like night and day. I literally lost track of what day it was by Wednesday. I have a tendency to mumble to myself when I'm alone and thinking about something. It feels one way when I'm home, but talking to myself feels completely different when laying in a tent in the woods. It's a reminder of the aloneness.
For whatever reason I brought an old Sony Walkman radio. Fuck your Ipods. Picked up a Minnesota NPR station out of Grand Marais. David Brooks was giving a speech in Aspen. I turned it off quickly but made a mental note to check back in an hour. Boots Riley is my new favorite rapper. Which is cool because he's my first favorite rapper. Great interview with Terry Gross. And then came the news. Scott Pruitt has stepped down at EPA.
I fucking smiled from ear to ear. I looked out at the lake as if expecting it to smile back at me. I spent that entire day smiling about it. Giggling even. Small victory but I'll take it and deal with Trump's "next douchebag up" game plan later. Wheeler? Coal lobbyist? OK I hate him now but still. Scott Pruitt. So delicious. I hope his pocket-lining gets exposed and he gets charged criminally.
Grice, eagles, hummingbirds, a grebe, ducks, loons, jays, crows, so many different small birds that I didn't even bother cracking David Sibley real-time. How can anybody identify these things? They never sit still. So many birds buzzing around up there I have to figure half the tourism is birders. Still not entirely sure if those were juvenile eagles or ospreys. Jack the host assures me they're all eagles. They all hang around what has come to be called "Eagle Island." I shot 5 minutes of eagle video, and spent another 25 minutes just sitting on shore and watching them circling and dive-bombing and fucking around with each other. Only 3 or 4 show up on the video but there are more like 9 of them. A half hour I'll never forget for as long as I live.
I like to break down camp a day early, leaving just the bare bones stuff for the last night. Tent, air mattress, sleeping bag, food, coffee pot. It makes for a quick exit in the morning. No need to stay until noon when I have 10 hours of driving ahead of me. I got a little melancholy that last morning when I shot that dawn video. Didn't feel like leaving yet. I usually get that feeling that I'm ready to go home a couple of days before a vacation is over. I never got it this time. I still haven't gotten it. I wish I was still up there.
