Swedish gun laws. And how to Own guns in Sweden.

Here's a quick overview of Swedish gun laws and the hoops we jump through to own guns. I'm writing this to show Americans and Swedes alike that we can in fact own guns here.
Let's start with the easiest and most common way to get firearms in Sweden. Hunting:
To get a firearm for hunting you have to take a short (or long stretched out over 3weeks to a year) course where you learn the basics of hunting and firearm handling.
You start by studying for the test, I did this several months before I started the course itself. There are several books you can read but i just read the basic book i got when i ordered the course (din väg till jägarexamen). Read the book at least twice and take free online tests. (the book is about what it means to be a hunter, hunting seasons and rules and such)
Different places have different planning but we started out with some short theory and watched some slideshows about safety etc on the first day. After that we went out and started shooting clay pigeons and throughout the day practiced shooting moose, rabbit etc.
On the second day we practiced shooting some more and had a shotgun ranging test.
On the third day we had our written test and safe gun handling test, precision shooting test with a 22. clay shooting test, rabbit shooting test and running moose shooting test.
And when you are done with all this you can finally buy a rifle or shotgun.
Semi autos and forward repeating shotguns (pump action) have fashion rules. They cannot have a telescoping stock or a folding stock and the semi autos have to look like fudd bolt action rifles (any military design is banned).
Due to police activism a lot of firearms that should be ok are more or less banned (like the tikka t3x tac a1 because it has a folding stock even though it is a bolt action rifle). You can still modify any bolt action however you would like though... as long as the barrel is at least 47cm. And you can only own 6 guns for hunting (4 + 2 later(for some reason)), though sometimes you can motivate more.
There is also PRS shooting clubs in Sweden where you shoot long range, though i sadly have no knowledge about this since i've yet to start with this. But I can recommend "hagge banke" on youtube, he does videos about all this stuff (and helped me write this thx dude).
How to get pistols and rifles:
There are more ways to go about getting a pistol than just one. The easiest way is by taking an ipsc course. I'm sure i don't have to go into depth about this course as i believe it's the same as in america, but essentially its a short 3 day course on gun handling, shooting and safety, the rules and commands of ipsc etc. You also take a written test.
I wish i knew how easy it is to take the ipsc course before i started with national shooting, in which you have to shoot gold series and blah blah blah, super boring as opposed to dynamic shooting so i wont go into depth on that, and it's the most common pistol shooting sport in Sweden and i'm sure there's tons of info about it elsewhere.
Anyway, back to the subject. After you get your ipsc license you have to wait one year to own pistols (you can own pretty much any pistols/caliber and there are no magazine restrictions or bs like that)
After two years and another shooting course, this time with an ar15 you can purchase any ar15 variant (though no aks) To get an ak you have to be part of a club that shoots "free rifle" where they use anything from ak47s to sig 553s.
Oh and you have to be active in your club or else they cant sign your license, and since gun ownership in Sweden is based on your need for it (in this case to compete in competitions) they see your inactivity as you no longer needing your firearm and therefore they can revoke your license. But you don't need to compete regularly, just show up at range days, practise and log your visits and maybe compete in a local competition once every year or so.
Some extra random info:
All "major or essential" parts of a firearm requires a license, like the slide of a pistol, the bolt of a rifle and the upper on an ar15.
You NEED a qualified safe for storage of your firearms and the police can come and inspect your storage of arms and ammo though i believe they have to give a 2 week notice ahead of time.
Ammo is not required to be stored in your safe, but in a secure and locked area. This is a really vague law but most interpret it as just keeping it out of sight in your locked home.
There are no restrictions on how much ammo you can buy, though it's recommended to not have more than 10kg as it could be a fire hazard.
There are also cowboy action shooting clubs in Sweden but they are more rare and less active.
Ammo is really expensive here, REALLY expensive... a single round of 223 cost about 1 usd.
Guns are also more expensive, the ruger american rifle for example costs about 600usd.
Ccw is not allowed and self defense with or without a gun is basically illegal.
The government tried and failed to implement the EU firearms directive and now they are once again trying to ban lead in ammunition.
Now i'm by far no expert on this subject but i've been trying to research this for a while and there is little to no information on this in Sweden. Maybe the government/police is trying to suppress info about this or maybe shooting federations and clubs are bad at advertising.
So here's my contribution in trying to get this info out there, below are some swedish words so this thread will show up for people in Sweden trying to research this stuff.

dust

Dust From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For other uses, see Dust (disambiguation).

Global oceanic distribution of dust deposition Dust consists of particles in the atmosphere that come from various sources such as soil, dust lifted by weather (an aeolian process), volcanic eruptions, and pollution. Dust in homes, offices, and other human environments contains small amounts of plant pollen, human and animal hairs, textile fibers, paper fibers, minerals from outdoor soil, human skin cells, burnt meteorite particles, and many other materials which may be found in the local environment.[1]

Three years of use without cleaning has caused this laptop heat sink to become clogged with dust, and it can no longer be used as it may overheat. House dust mites are present indoors wherever humans live. Positive tests for dust mite allergies are extremely common among people with asthma. Dust mites are microscopic arachnids whose primary food is dead human skin cells, but they do not live on living people. They and their faeces and other allergens they produce are major constituents of house dust, but because they are so heavy they are not suspended for long in the air. They are generally found on the floor and other surfaces until disturbed (by walking, for example). It could take somewhere between twenty minutes and two hours for dust mites to settle back down out of the air.
Dust mites are a nesting species that prefers a dark, warm, and humid climate. They flourish in mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, and carpets. Their feces include enzymes that are released upon contact with a moist surface, which can happen when a person inhales, and these enzymes can kill cells within the human body.[2] House dust mites did not become a problem until humans began to use textiles, such as western style blankets and clothing.[3]
Atmospheric dust[edit] File:Imported Dust in North American Skies.ogv Presentation on imported dust in North American skies
Large dust storm over Libya Atmospheric or wind-borne dust, also known as aeolian dust, comes from arid and dry regions where high velocity winds are able to remove mostly silt-sized material, deflating susceptible surfaces. This includes areas where grazing, ploughing, vehicle use, and other human activities have further destabilized the land, though not all source areas have been largely affected by anthropogenic impacts.[4] One-third of the global land area is covered by dust-producing surfaces, made up of hyper-arid regions like the Sahara which covers 0.9 billion hectares, and drylands which occupy 5.2 billion hectares.[5]
Dust in the atmosphere is produced by saltation and sandblasting of sand-sized grains, and it is transported through the troposphere. This airborne dust is considered an aerosol and once in the atmosphere, it can produce strong local radiative forcing. Saharan dust in particular can be transported and deposited as far as the Caribbean and Amazonia, and may affect air temperatures, cause ocean cooling, and alter rainfall amounts.[4]
Middle East[edit] Dust in the Middle East has been a historic phenomenon. Recently, because of climate change and the escalating process of desertification, the problem has worsened dramatically. As a multi-factor phenomenon, there is not yet a clear consensus on the sources or potential solutions to the problem.
In Iran, the dust is already affecting more than 5 million people directly, and has emerged as a serious government issue in recent years. In the province of Khuzestan it has led to the severe reduction of air quality. The amount of pollutants in the air has surpassed more than 50 times the normal level several times in a year. Recently, initiatives such as Project-Dust have been established to directly study the Middle Eastern dust.
Road dust[edit] Main article: Road debris Dust kicked up by vehicles traveling on roads[6] may make up 33% of air pollution.[7] Road dust consists of deposits of vehicle exhausts and industrial exhausts, particles from tire and brake wear, dust from paved roads or potholes, and dust from construction sites. Road dust is a significant source contributing to the generation and release of particulate matter into the atmosphere.[8] Control of road dust is a significant challenge in urban areas, and also in other locations with high levels of vehicular traffic upon unsealed roads, such as mines and landfill dumps.
Road dust may be suppressed by mechanical methods like street sweeper vehicles equipped with vacuum cleaners,[9] vegetable oil sprays,[10] or with water sprayers. Improvements in automotive engineering have reduced the amount of PM10s produced by road traffic; the proportion representing re-suspension of existing particulates has, increased as a result.
Coal dust[edit] Coal dust is responsible for the lung disease known as pneumoconiosis, including black lung disease that occurs among coal miners. The danger of coal dust resulted in environmental legislation regulating work place air quality in some jurisdictions. In addition, if enough coal dust is dispersed within the air in a given area, in very rare circumstances, it can create an explosion hazard under certain circumstances. These circumstances are typically within confined spaces.
Dust control[edit] Control of atmospheric dust[edit] Most governmental EPAs, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandate that facilities that generate dust, minimize or mitigate the production of dust in their operation. The most frequent dust control violations occur at new residential housing developments in urban areas. United States Federal law requires that construction sites obtain permits to conduct earth moving, clearing of areas, to include plans to control dust emissions when the work is being carried out. Control measures include such simple practices as spraying construction and demolition sites with water, and preventing the tracking of dust onto adjacent roads.
Some of the issues include:[citation needed]
Reducing dust related health risks that include allergic reactions, pneumonia and asthmatic attacks. Improving visibility and road safety. Providing cleaner air, cleaner vehicles and cleaner homes and promoting better health. Improving crop productivity in agriculture.[citation needed] Reducing vehicle maintenance costs by lowering the levels of dust that clog filters, bearings and machinery. Reducing driver fatigue, maintenance on suspension systems and improving fuel economy. Increasing cumulative effect - each new application builds on previous residuals reducing re-application rate *while improving performance. US federal laws require dust control on sources such as vacant lots, unpaved parking lots, and unpaved roads. Dust in such places may be suppressed by mechanical methods,[citation needed] including paving or laying down gravel, or stabilizing the surface with water, vegetable oils[10] or other dust suppressants, or by using water misters to suppress dust that is already airborne.[citation needed]
Control of domestic dust[edit]
Dust on the air filter Dust control is the suppression of solid particles with diameters less than 500 micrometers. Dust poses a health threat to children,[11] older people, and those with respiratory illnesses.
House dust can become airborne easily. Care is required when removing dust to avoid causing the dust to become airborne. A feather duster tends to agitate the dust so it lands elsewhere. Products like Pledge and Swiffer are specifically made for removing dust by trapping it with sticky chemicals.
Certified HEPA (tested to MIL STD 282) can effectively trap 99.97% of dust at 0.3 micrometers. Not all HEPA (type/media) filters can effectively stop dust; while vacuum cleaners with HEPA (type/media) filters, water, or cyclones may filter more effectively than without, they may still exhaust millions of particles per cubic foot of air circulated. Central vacuum cleaners can be effective in removing dust, especially if they are exhausted directly to the outdoors.
Air filtering appliances differ greatly in their effectiveness. Laser particle counters are an effective way to measure filter effectiveness, medical grade instruments can test for particles as small as 0.3 micrometers. In order to test for dust in the air, there are several options available. Pre weighted filter and matched weight filters made from polyvinyl chloride or mixed cellulose ester are suitable for respirable dust (less than 10 micrometers in diameter).[12]
Control of dust resistance on surfaces[edit] A dust resistant surface is a state of prevention against dust contamination or damage, by a design or treatment of materials and items in manufacturing or through a repair process[citation needed]. A reduced tacticity of a synthetic layer or covering can protect surfaces and release small molecules that could have remained attached. A panel, container or enclosure with seams may feature types of strengthened rigidity or sealant to vulnerable edges and joins.
Dust in other contexts[edit] Dust accelerates snowmelt in the San Juan Mountains
2005 (Less dust)
2006 (More dust)
2008 (Less dust)
2009 (More dust) Dust in outer space[edit] Cosmic dust is widely present in space, where gas and dust clouds are primary precursors for planetary systems. The zodiacal light, as seen in a dark night sky, is produced by sunlight reflected from particles of dust in orbit around the Sun. The tails of comets are produced by emissions of dust and ionized gas from the body of the comet. Dust also covers solid planetary bodies, and vast dust storms occur on Mars that cover almost the entire planet. Interstellar dust is found between the stars, and high concentrations produce diffuse nebulae and reflection nebulae.
Dust is widely present in the galaxy. Ambient radiation heats dust and re-emits radiation into the microwave band, which may distort the cosmic microwave background power spectrum. Dust in this regime has a complicated emission spectrum, and includes both thermal dust emission and spinning dust emission.[13]
Dust samples returned from outer space may provide information about conditions in the early solar system. Several spacecraft have sought to gather samples of dust and other materials. Among these craft was Stardust, which flew past Comet Wild 2 in 2004, and returned a capsule of the comet's remains to Earth in January 2006. In 2010 the Japanese Hayabusa spacecraft returned samples of dust from the surface of an asteroid.

Questions Answers
In your opinion, what is holding back other countries from adopting this technique? Having the goals set by a municipality that has control over the entire process so there are 100 of different companies/organisations who get in the way.
So in what point of your life did you decide that you actually want to be a garbage engineer? I'm still not sure this is what I want to do :)
How do you say "garbage" in Swedish? I want to make sure Ikea isn't playing a cruel trick on me. Sopor.
How efficient is the process? The US has attempted the waste to energy idea before, but the costs never balance out. It started as a way of getting rid of waste. Landfills take up a lot of space and we dont have that much land in Europe compared to the US. You also need a good infrastructure to deliver the energy, we mostly use it for heating homes and that is done by heating the water and sending it through pipes to peoples radiators, it is a lot more efficient than transporting electricity and using radiators that run on that.
Hey trash man, thanks for the ama. 2] In the article, it seemed like they did end up with a small amount of quite concentrated, very toxic ash. What do you do with this stuff in the long term? Like someone already answered it's landfilled or used in concrete/asphalt for roads.
1] Sounds like they scrub the allmighty living shit out of the emissions. What is the worst thing in the remaining emissions, and how does it compare to comparable fossil fuel pollution? 3] What do you do at the plant? One thing that is not removed is Helium unfortunately I dont actually work at the plant, I work with the part that handles the collecting of the garbage, a lot of costumer contact to make sure their waste collection works out and introducing separate collection of organic waste.
Does the trash burn by itself or do you need to mix like fuel or gas? There is no extra fuel added but it needs to be mixed from different sources to get a good mix.
Does the process result in a net energy gain or does more of the added fuel go in then usable heat comes out? And how competitive is the 'price' of the energy gained compared to a normal (commercial?) power-generator (gas, coal, biomass)? Or is it just a 'free' by-product that'd be a shame to waste? Because you have to spend so much money on cleaning out pollution from this mixed fuel it's not as competitive as oil/coal. But since it is as you say a "free" by-product it's better to get the energy from it than putting it in landfills.
3] That's cool you're separating organics... I assume this is getting composted.. how are you doing the composting and what happens to the compost? So you get both the energy and all the minerals from the organic waste and can recycle it.
How did Sweden decide on what land would be used for this imported garbage? What factors were there that might or might not be obvious to someone not in the field or who is a Swede? Some countries like Italy is not very good to get waste from because you can get litterally anything in what is supposed to be household waste (toxic waste etc.) So preferably from a country that has organized collecting the waste but no way of getting rid off it.
And that they are willing to pay us for handling their waste ofc.
I just wanted to say thanks for all that you do. Sweden is quite the role model in this department and I hope that other countries are looking up to you. On that note, what do you think needs to happen to encourage the rest of the world(mostly USA) to get involved with more alternative energy production? Probably the aversion americans have of the state/municipalities. You can do a lot more long term plans like setting up the infrastructure of garbage collecting and energy transportation if it's one big organisation that does it instead of many small ones.
Can you tell us about the negative side effects, if there are any? Negative side is that if you dont invest a lot of money from the start the incineration plant will pollute the air.
Sounds like this would produce a lot of CO2? But i guess engineers are smart enough to measure that etc. What ARE some of the undesireable byproducts? In the fly ash you get a lot of dangerous byproducts and that still needs to go to landfilling because we dont have any good way of recycling it.
It does produce a lot of CO2 but compared to landfill where methane gas is produced you do less harm to the environment.
I thought CO2 had a much longer residence time than methane though? otherwise it sounds good. I just want to know it isn't too good to be true. Would love to see some solid studies about this stuff! Link to www.avfallsverige.se
What's the strangest thing you've ever found ? (in garbage) I dont collect garbage myself but one of my colleges who used to do it once found a whole pigs head in a normal garbage bin in an appartment complex.
Om vi sopproducenter kunde göra en sak för att göra ditt och dina kollegors liv enklare, vad vore denna sak? Läsa informationen vi skickar ut och följa den :) Det räcker väldigt långt.
What's the situation with air pollution from the incineration? Straight out the chimney or are the fumes captured and filtered somehow? There is obviously screening for items that are hazardous when burnt, what's the procedure and is it effective? Is it any better, environmentally, to burn the rubbish rather than bury it? It goes through several stages of filtering from electrolysis to good old fashioned filters.
Is "garbage engineer" a degree, or did you major in engineering and minor in garbage? Nah was just a funny title for the thread. But my work title is Planing engineer which is a bit off since I do not have an engineering degree.
Is the feeling of doing something amazing for the benefit of others provide you with a sense of pride and joy like it should? Some days when you solve a problem or done some information campaign that you see result from it feels kind of that way. Some days when nothing works like it should and people have a hard time getting rid of their trash it's anoying as hell.
There is a blockage in my flats waste shoot. Could you send someone to fix it? I am in Vårbergsplan 4, Skärholmen. Sorry dude I work in Malmö.
Isn't Sweden producing massive amounts of air pollution with the method of incineration? Have you heard of plasmafication? Any thoughts on switching to a cleaner, more efficient technology? It's up to the different inciniration plants what way they do it and when they invest in new technology so I'm sure there are plenty of people in Sweden who are looking at it but I'm not sure if anyone is switching over to it at the moment.
This question is more about you being Swedish, and kind of off topic. I'm a Norwegian, and I've always wondered if you guys listen to our music much? I mean, we love your music. Have you heard of/Do you listen to Kaizers Orchestra, Mods, Paperboys, Röyksopp or any other Norwegian bands? I was in Norway this summer for a wedding and we discussed that abit between some swedes and norwegians. I think the conclusion was that you listen to more swedish music than we listen to norwegian.
What do you do when u come across the frequent Swedish corpses from hardcore experimental-bondage gone wrong?!??!! Drink snaps to kill the pain.
Can you please engineer all garbage of the future to flat-pack? No I'm a garbage at engineering.
Malmö is a really beautiful city, but reputed for crime; Do you notice any of it during your everyday life? (Considering moving there someday) No I never notice any reason for the bad rep this city has.
Which do you like better: Volvo or SAAB? SAAB.
Hi, I'm not sure if you are stil answering questions. But I was wondering if you can tell me where to find general information on how Sweden has managed to pull this off and what systems they have put in place. Thank you. Link to www.avfallsverige.se
I thought he was just a shitty engineer and was being very honest with himself. Considering that I have no real engineering title then yeah.
