Numismatist question: what protects casino chips from counterfeiting? Coins have all sorts of special "wear" points that make counterfeiting difficult, yet are only worth cents. Chips are worth large amounts, yet look relatively simple in their creation. What am I missing?

Please legal advice my son is in trouble and I need to help him but I don't even know where to start. He has been wrongly arrested and charged for something that wasn't his fault but no one will listen when he tries to explain. My son is in his first semester at school. One of his neighbors told my son that his dad had promised to give him money for rent and books but instead had just given him casino chips. His neighbor said he couldn’t cash them in because he is only 18, but since my son is 21 he offered to do it. They went to Las Vegas and my son went inside while the neighbor stayed outside because he was not old enough. The casino said the chips were not real and called the police and had my son arrested. He tried to explain to the police but his neighbor was not in the car and he had left behind his bag with more fake chips. My son had to spend the night in jail. The police went to talk to his neighbor but the apartment was empty and the neighbor was not there. No one can find him now. The police and the casino are accusing my son of making the chips and now he has been charged for making, possessing and trying to cash counterfeit chips. My son is innocent and was scammed. He was only in Nevada for a month and never went to Las Vegas or a casino before this. He didn’t know the chips were not real and was only trying to help. I found online that stuff like this has happened before but instead of looking for the neighbor the police are blaming my son and they won’t listen when he says he is innocent. I am flying to Nevada soon so I can be with him through this. I can’t even afford bail because it is so much. My son wasn’t trying to scam the casino and he had never seen a casino chip before so he doesn’t know the difference between a real one and a counterfeit one. He is not a criminal. He has never been in trouble before and we are both scared. I just want to know what we can do to make the police listen and get my son out of this. Please help me, I don’t know what to do.

I've never been to vegas or gambled or anything, so the only idea I have about the whole experience is based on movies mostly, and it seems like there is always a scene where the characters use the chips (sometimes $10k+ chips) on a crazy night bender. But for that much money, wouldn't there be some people who would try and fake them, and wouldn't there be some way to make sure they're the real deal?

I am sure there are some out there. In that same context you hear all the time about counterfeit bills all of the time. I just feel that chips wouldn't be to hard and any time I've ever cashed out they never check very hard if they are real or not.
